Musar movement

The Mussar movement is a Jewish ethical, educational and cultural movement ( a "Jewish Moralist Movement" ), which was developed in the 19th century by Orthodox Jews of Eastern Europe, particularly the Lithuanian Jews. As its founder is considered Israel Lipkin Salanter ( 1810-1883 ).

The Hebrew term mussar (often musar ) comes from the book of Proverbs 1:2 meaning instruction, discipline or follow. The term was used by the Mussar movement to refer to efforts disciplined for an ethical and spiritual development.

The study of Mussar is a part of the study of Jewish ethics.
