Muscat (grape and wine)

The Muscat is one of the oldest cultivated grapevines, which is why there are a large number of variations. Probably the origin of the grape in Asia Minor. Phoenician and Greek colonists spread the muscatel in the eastern Mediterranean. Later, the Romans valued the Greek " passum " as a particularly fine wine.

According Central and Northern Europe reached Muscat by the intensification of long-distance trade in the 12th century. Venice played an important intermediary role between East and West and controlled several islands in the eastern Mediterranean, where Muscat was grown.
