Muscat Ottonel

Intersection of Chasselas × Muscat d' Eisenstadt

Muscat Ottonel is a white grape variety and comes from France. Jean -Pierre Vibert from Angers selected the variety in 1839 from a seedling found and were spread by also based in Angers Jean Moreau- Robert from the year 1852. The parent varieties are Chasselas and Muscat d' Eisenstadt. Long the varieties Chasselas and Muscat de Saumur précoce were regarded as breeding partners.

Meaning she also enjoys in Alsace, where they may be sold next to the Muscat blanc à petits grains as Muscat d'Alsace. The variety is now widely grown extensively in Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary. Acreage also exist in Moldova, Ukraine, South Africa and Canada.

The wine is of a greenish-yellow color and has an intense, fine and spicy nutmeg bouquet. He is mild, usually low in alcohol and extract. The Muscat Ottonel can develop into high grade levels distinct, very fine citrus flavors. The species prefers fertile, rich soils with good water supply and sheltered sunny locations.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is spinnwebig to slightly hairy and woolly reddish-brown color. The deep red, glossy young leaves are hairless.
  • The small to medium-sized leaves are indented three - or five-lobed and deep. The petiole is lyres - shape up closed. The blade is serrated blunt. The teeth are set moderately dilated in comparison to other varieties.
  • The drum-shaped grape is small to medium in size, sometimes winged on one side and loose-. The roundish berries are medium in size and of a yellow-green color that present themselves each sun braungefleckt when fully ripe berries. The berries have a thick skin and have a slight taste of nutmeg.

The grape ripens about 5 -6 days after Chasselas and is therefore applicable in international comparison as early maturing.

The variety is susceptible to powdery mildew, downy mildew and gray mold. Since the Muscat Ottonel prone to strong coulure, the returns are highly variable and extremely insecure.

Due to different leaf descriptions doubted Henry Moog in 1957, whether grown in France and in German-speaking varieties of the same name are in fact identical.
