Muscatine County, Iowa

The Muscatine County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. In the census in 2010, the County had 42,745 inhabitants and a population density of 37.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Muscatine.

The County is located in Eastern Iowa, bounded on the southeast by Illinois, where the border by the Mississippi River is formed and has an area of ​​1163 square kilometers, of which 27 square kilometers are water surface. It borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Muscatine County was formed on December 7, 1836 from former parts of the Des Moines County. It was named after the Muscatine Iceland in Mississippi.

1833 sent Colonel George Davenport of Illinois three representatives in the territory to build a trading post. These were probably the first white men who ever lived here. In the same year James W. Casey and John Vanatta came to this area. They opened on 1 June 1833 supply depot called Casey's Woodpile for steamships. The first official land sales began in November 1838 at a price of $ 1.25 per acre of land and a year later started the construction of the courthouse and a prison.

On December 23, 1864 this courthouse was totally destroyed by fire, and in the subsequent two years, a new built on the same site. With the construction of the courthouse still used today was begun on September 26, 1907.
