Musée de Tahiti et des Îles

The Musée de Tahiti et des Îles ( Tahitian: Te Fare Manaha ) is a 1974 founded the Museum of Polynesian antiquities, history and natural history based in Punaauia Tahiti in French Polynesia.

Collection

The museum houses the Ethnographic Museum ethnological collection, Natural History Museum as an ornithological collection, plus a herbarium, a Malacological and conchologische collection of mollusks and shells as well as a history and art museum and in 2004 a collection of historical photographs. In addition to information on the geology and geography of Tahiti here are monumental stone statues of Tahiti, the Marquesas and Raivavae issued as well as weapons, ritual objects and craft objects.

The collection includes more than 30,000 objects, including about 15,000 plants of French Polynesia, 11,500 ethnographic and 5,500 art objects.

In October 2010, the decades-long collection of the Société des Etudes Océaniennes ( SEO) has been integrated into the museum.

Director of the Museum until his death Jean -Marc Pambrun ( 1953-2011 ).

Cooperation

In December 2005, the museum has entered into a collaboration with the Musée du quai Branly for joint exhibition projects.
