Museo Picasso Málaga

The Museo Picasso in Málaga (Andalusia, Spain) presented in the premises of the Palacio de Buenavista distance from the birthplace of Pablo Picasso in the city center with more than 200 of his works, both paintings and sculptures and ceramics, an overview of all periods of the artist.

History of the Palacio de Buenavista

The building dates back in its present form from the 16th century and is an example of the widespread in southern Spain this era mixture of, in this case Italian, Renaissance and Mudejar architecture. It was until 1540 Diego de Cazalla, paymaster of the royal army and navy, built in the years 1530. Cazalla had been involved in 1487 in the wake of the Reconquista in the conquest of time for the Emirate of Nasrid -listed town (see Al -Andalus ). Parts of the building, such as the eastern tower and the main courtyard, indicate that it was built on the site of a Nasrid palace. Until the 19th century it served as a family residence into it.

1939 was declared a Monumento nacional ( Bien de Interès Cultural ) and 1946 leased from the state. 1961 in ( provincial Museum of Fine Arts ), opened the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes.

Picasso collection

In 1997 the Andalusian government acquired the Palacio de los Condes de Buenavista, to establish the first museum entirely dedicated to the works of Picasso in his hometown. They chose this building because Christine Ruiz- Picasso, of which a large part of the exhibits were made ​​available, a typical Andalusian building for the presentation of the collection preferred. In October 1997, a foundation was established, which left the Picasso heirs for 50 years works by the artist to the exhibition. To record the collection, the library, the documentation center, a training center and an auditorium also some adjacent buildings were adapted or newly built. The architectural line of the conversion work was Richard Gluckman, Isabel Cámara and Rafael Martín Delgado. The American Institute of Architects awarded in January 2006 an honorary award at the Museo Picasso, thereby acknowledging the successful adaptation of the nearly 500 year old building and the harmonious integration of the new parts of the building into the surrounding old town.

The opening of the museum took place on 27 October 2003. First director was Carmen Giménez, who had previously initiated two exhibitions of Picasso in Malaga and had the idea of ​​a new Picasso Museum instrumental in driving.
