Museon

The Museon is a museum of science and culture in The Hague (Netherlands). The collection includes objects from the fields of geology, biology, archeology, history and ethnology.

Founding and beginnings

In 1904 the museum project was initiated " Museum voor het Onderwijs " ( Museum of Education ) from the newspaper editor Frits van Paasschen. He wanted a museum, in which children learn about the industry. However, the first director of the museum was a geologist, Herman van Cappelle, promoted the collection rather in the direction of natural history and ethnology, instead of industry and technology. From the ideas of van Paaschens especially the original idea was forming. From the early beginnings to the present special lessons are held for youth groups, thematically based on the existing museum pieces. The Museum of "Education" 1910 was the first institution in the Netherlands, having performed training films.

Time as a community museum

In the year 1920, from the private project " Museum of Education " an institution of the political municipality of The Hague. The museum often changed his location until the community decided to instruct the architect Wim Quist with the construction of its own building. This was completed in 1985 in the government district of The Hague. Since then, the museum bears the name Museon. In 1997, the museum was re-privatized.

Educational mission

The Museon offers educational events and programs for a broad target group, it is nonetheless the majority of visitors to school groups. The offer is to impart knowledge about man and his close connection to nature, but also culture in an understandable way. The collection currently comprises around 260,000 objects.
