MuseScore

MuseScore is a music notation program for Linux, Windows and Mac. The WYSIWYG editor supports playback of notes entered as well as the import and export in various popular file formats.

The user interface and the input capabilities of the notes resemble known, fee-based music notation programs such as Finale or Sibelius. However MuseScore is open source and licensed under the GNU General Public License.

Functions

Using MuseScore to many common tasks western music notation can be accomplished. Also percussion notation and printing of sheet music are possible. As currently the only free note software MuseScore runs on all major operating systems. This is, inter alia, possible because the program uses Qt, a library, cross-platform programming also allows native code.

MuseScore dominated the import and export of numerous music file formats, including MIDI and MusicXML. In addition, files commercial music programs such as Band-in- a-Box and partly Capella can be imported. Especially is - compared to other free programs with graphical user interface - the ability to set notes without an external output in PDF, SVG or PNG file plug- in, or to LilyPond format to convert.

Another unique feature is the direct link to the online platform musescore.com about the putative MuseScore Connect widget module, which one can publish, search and download sheet music on the web.

History

The official development MuseScore began in 2002. MusE, a MIDI sequencer for Linux, based at that time on a created as a fork code base for displaying and editing of notes. Meanwhile, author and programmer Werner Schweer decided at that time to extract Muses music notation skills and to publish as a standalone solution. Since then MuseScore is constantly being developed and could soon be downloaded for free use, although the official release candidate was far from being reached. The website MuseScore.org was created in 2008, and the program was downloaded from the beginning up to 15,000 times per month. Version 0.9.5 was already largely stable and was released in August 2009. The official release of MuseScore 1.0 took place in February 2012. By 2013, the program has been downloaded more than three million times.

MuseScore 2.0 is currently in development. A date for publication is not yet known.
