Museum of Romani Culture

The Museum of Roma Culture ( Muzeum Czech Romské kultury ) is an institution for the care of the history and culture of the Roma. It is located in Brno, Czech Republic.

It was founded by Roma from Brno in 1991, shortly after the Velvet Revolution, which makes it the oldest institution of its kind in the world. In 2001 it moved to its present building at the Bratislava on the street, which is generally regarded as the center of the Roma community of Brno. Since 1 December 2005, there is the first part of the permanent exhibition. This deals with the life, culture and important events of the Roma from 1945 to 2005. In six rooms on about 280 m² the way of the Roma from India to be traced down to the present age.

Here are the visitors get an insight into the lifestyles, culture, origin, language of the Sinti and Roma. Likewise, temporary exhibitions, mostly art and photography. They come from both private collections, but also contain borrowed objects. In addition, the museum is an important research of this ethnic group in central Europe. The public library has a stock of 3,000 books, magazines, CDs. It will take place, organized by the Museum readings, concerts and discussions. Also Romany language courses are organized. In the afternoon, the club is open for Roma children from the neighborhood. There is one program that is designed by volunteers with the children, such as theater, dance, drawing.
