Museum of Vuk and Dositej

The Vuk and Dositej Museum ( Вуков и Доситејев музеј ) in Belgrade is a museum to life, work and legacy of Vuk Stefanović reformer of the Serbian language Karadžić ' ( 1787-1864 ) and Dositej Obradovic ' ( 1742-1811 ), writer and first minister of education of Serbia. The museum is regarded as symbolic place for understanding the revival of Serbian culture in the time of the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottoman Empire. Since 1979, it is subordinate to the National Museum of Serbia.

History

The Vuk and Dositej Museum was founded in 1949. There is a built in Ottoman-style building of the former Belgrade University, the first university of Serbia and later the University of Belgrade. This was a foundation of the Year 1808 by the key figure in the Serbian education and former Minister of Education Dositej Obradovic. Karadzic was one of her first students. The building was probably the residence of the Belgrade Defterdar (Head of the Ottoman province of Treasury ). Certain presumptions According it was also once a harem.

Architecture

Built in 1739 the building is considered to be the oldest preserved residential building in Belgrade typical Turkish town house style and is thus an important cultural and historical monument of Southeast Europe. It consists of two floors with attic. The wooden ceiling structure was restored in 2010.

Interior

The upper floor is dedicated to Vuk Stefanović Karadžić and was designed by his daughter Mina Vukomanovic. On display are personal legacies of the writer ( travel bags, glasses, stilt walkers, rod, holster, smoke needed), documents of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (diplomas, business cards, invoices, receipts ), portraits, correspondence and books from his personal library, including a copy of the English translation John Bowring 's poems Karadžić ' from the year 1827.

The ground floor is dedicated to Dositej Obradovic. In addition to the museum library some belongings and a large number of his manuscripts are kept. Among the exhibits is a copy of the plaque that commemorates Obradovic stay in London in 1784 in St. Clement 's Court EC4. Only a small part of his personal property survived the bombing of Belgrade in 1813 and is on display.

Undertaking

The museum presents thematic exhibitions outside the permanent exhibition. Some of them are part of the outreach program from all over Serbia. It organizes lectures with the participation of scientists, writers and historians, as well as musicians and actors.

Since 1958 the museum in an annual publication published under the title "Small Case " Materials and contributions to Dositej Obradovic and Vuk Karadžić and their effects. In addition to the "Small Case " distributes publications such as guides, monographs and catalogs of exhibitions in Serbian and English the museum.
