Museum of Wellington City & Sea

The Museum of Wellington City & Sea is a New Zealand museum on the history of Wellington. It is located in built in 1892 Bond Store, a historic building on Jervois Quay on the waterfront of Wellington Harbour.

History

The museum was originally conceived by the Wellington harbor authority as a maritime museum in 1972. With the restructuring begun in 1989, of public institutions in New Zealand, the Wellington City Council decided the range of exhibits to expand the social and cultural history of the region. The transformation of the building into the Museum of Wellington City & Sea was completed in 1999. It is led by the Museum Trust.

Themes of the museum

The area we live By the Sea presents the maritime history of the city, while Te Whanganui -a- Tara deals with the history of Maori and European settlement. An exhibition on the 20th century gives visitors an impression of the development of Wellington in the last hundred years. On a movie screen a series of films about Wellington's history is shown. This section of the exhibition is divided into the region myths of the Maori, the other is dedicated to the memory of the Wahine ferry disaster ferry in the port of Wellington dedicated. The attached exhibit shows the Plimmer 's Ark, the remains of a sailing ship built in 1848, which was discovered during renovation work between 1997 and 1999 in the Old Bank Arcade.
