Musicstation

Music Station was a shopping platform for mobile music, which was in competition with Apple's iTunes Store. The service was discontinued on 31 December 2011. Operators was the U.S. firm Omnifone. These were a joint project of the leading mobile phone manufacturers such as Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and Samsung, a total of 30 mobile operators and the four labels Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, EMI Music and Warner Music International, and some independent publishers.

Project start

Music Station launched just ahead of the launch of the iPhone in the U.S. on 29 June 2007. In the future Music Station throughout Europe, Asia and Africa should start. The mobile phone manufacturers involved wanted to immediately deliver them to mobile phones which are already equipped with software for accessing Music Station.

Vision

"We expect that this year we can offer hundreds of millions of participants Music Station. We believe that the Music Station by the fact that consumers have the ultimate freedom of unlimited music access, wherever they are and no matter which phone they buy, which is currently outstanding offer regarding offers digital music to consumers, " said the head of the Music Station operator Omnifone, Rob Lewis.

The music companies were hoping that the Music Station is helping to make the consumption of music via mobile phone popular.

The offer should be possible with numerous Java and Symbian phones, which are equipped for fast data transfer and with an mp3 player, used.

User fees

For a fee of 2.99 euros per week for users was the offer of the said labels and other media providers. This price includes the costs of data transmission are included.
