Muskogee County, Oklahoma
Muskogee County is a county located in the state of Oklahoma in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Muskogee.
Geography
The County is located in east-central Oklahoma, is about 65 km from Arkansas and has an area of 2173 square kilometers, of which 65 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Wagoner County, Cherokee County, Sequoyah County, Haskell County, McIntosh County and Okmulgee County.
History
Muskogee County was formed in 1898 as an original county of Muskogee country. It was named after the North American Indian tribe of Muskogee.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Muskogee County 69 451 people in 26 458 households, and 18,467 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 63.73 percent White, 13.16 percent African Americans, 14.88 percent Native American, 0.58 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.19 percent from other races groups; 6.43 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.67 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 26 458 households 31.8 percent of children were under the age of 18 living with them. 52.8 percent were married couples living together, 13.3 percent were single mothers. 30.2 percent were non-families, 26.7 percent of all households and 12.3 percent of households had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.03 persons.
25.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.5 percent between 18 to 24, 26.7 percent between 25 and 44, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.3 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 28,438, and the median income for a family was $ 34,793. Males had a median income of $ 28,670 versus $ 20,457 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,828. 14.1 percent of families and 17.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
