Mustafa A.G. Abushagur

Mustafa A. G. Abu Schagur (Arabic: مصطفى أبو شاقور, DMG Mustafa Abu Šāqūr, * February 15, 1951 in Suq al- Juma ) is a Libyan electrical engineer and politician. From 12 September 2012 to 7 October 2012, he was prime minister of his country.

Career

Abu Schagur completed his basic studies at University of Tripoli. He then continued his studies in the United States. He received his master's and doctoral degrees at the California Institute of Technology. He has specialized in micro-optics and nanophotonics. Abu Schagur taught at the University of Rochester and the University of Alabama in Huntsville. From 2002 to 2008 he was Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT ). There he directed the research program for micro systems engineering department and the corresponding doctoral program. From 2008, he established the branch of RIT in Dubai and was its first president. He gave up the position to return to Libya in 2011 and to become a member of the transitional government.

Abuschagur is the founder of two companies. Photronix up in Malaysia manufactures fiber optic components. Liquid Light Inc. develops and manufactures optical networking systems.

Policy

Abu Schagur was during the 1980s and 1990s, a member of the National Front for the Salvation of Libya ( NFSL ), a resistance group against the Gaddafi government. Until his appointment as head of government, he was a leading member of which emerged from the NFSL party the National Front. Abu Schagur regarded as a technocrat. After the Libyan civil war, he was appointed deputy prime minister in the transitional government of Abdel Rahim el- Kib.

On 12 September 2012 Schagur was elected by the General National Congress in the second round of voting with 96 votes out of 200 to the Prime Minister and won against Mahmoud Jibril of the National Alliance forces through. The Party of Justice and structure of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood had Abu Schagur supported to prevent the victory of Jibril.

On October 2, 2012 Schagur presented his planned cabinet with 26 ministers, among whom were not a member of the the most votes fraction of the Alliance of National Forces is, above. The National Congress denied this, however, the Cabinet approval. After he also failed on the second attempt, Schagur was withdrawn on 7 October 2012, the order to form a government after a vote of no confidence.
