Mustapha Tettey Addy

Mustapha Tettey Addy ( born 1942 in Accra ) is a Ghanaian drummer.

Life

Addy comes from a respected drum family from the people of Ga. His father, the priest Kpani Kofi Addy, taught him early in the art of drumming, traditional chants and ritual dances of the people. After the death of his father in 1963 he succeeded him as Dadefoiakye ( head of the ritual drummer ). At the same time he worked at the Institute for African Studies, University of Ghana, where he had the opportunity to experience the musical styles of other regions and to learn from the Ewe drummers Husunui Afadi Adono Ladzekpo. He was a member of the Ghana Dance Ensemble during the 1960s.

In 1965 he undertook research and concert tours throughout Ghana, Ivory Coast and Nigeria. He also gave concerts in Eastern Europe, the Federal Republic of Germany, the UK and the USA. In 1974 he founded the group Ehimomo. He settled in Dusseldorf, where he began to work as a teacher of percussion and from where he undertook with his group toured Europe.

Between 1972 and 1981 Addy recorded seven albums. Their most successful was Come and Drum, the The workshop was recorded in a church in Dusseldorf in 1979 in collaboration with the International Academy of Dance and Culture. In 1982 he returned to Ghana, where he again worked at the Institute of African Studies and began to collect the Obonu music, ceremonial music of the royal Ashantiregion.

In 1986 he founded a group that initially The Drummers, later The Obonu was Drummers and with her in Accra, Royal Drums of Ghana album recorded in 1991 that an international audience made ​​its first ceremonial music available, otherwise only to Inthronisations and funeral ceremonies was allowed to be played.

Between 1992 and 1993 Addy traveled with Obonu Drummers by Germany, Britain and the United States. With its partners in the recording of 1979 he played a continuation of the album Come and Drum an under the title Come and Dance. After he had retired between 1995 and 1997 into a life as a farmer, he took his concerts with the new Royal Obonu Drummers on again.
