Muurame

Muurame [ mu ː rɑmɛ ] is a municipality with 9567 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the catchment area of the city of Jyväskylä in Central Finland.

Geography

Muurame is located approximately 16 kilometers southwest of the city Jyväskylä. Since the merging of Korpilahti and the rural community the administrative city Jyväskylä Jyväskylä Muurame surrounds in three directions. To the east is bordered Muurame to the community Toivakka.

The community center of Muurame lies on an isthmus between the lakes Päijänne and Muuratjärvi. The eponymous Muurame River flows through the community center from the Muuratjärvi in the lower-lying Päijänne. About a quarter of the municipal area is occupied by lakes.

The majority of the inhabitants Muurames, about 6,500 people live in the community center and the surrounding residential areas Kotiranta - Paavalinvuori, Hautalanmäki - Tervamäki, Rajala - Sulunsalmi, Verkkoniemi - Velkapohja, Jaakkola and Pitkälä - Riihiniemi. The State Road 9 ( E 63 ) from Turku to Kuopio leads in a north-south direction through the center of Muurame and connects it to the nearby Jyväskylä. From the northern edge of Muurame the road is expanded highway like. Parallel to the main road, railway line runs from Tampere to Jyväskylä by Muurame, but the community does not have its own railway station.

History

In the area of Muurame there was no long -sedentary settlement, the wilderness but was used by the Hämeern as a hunting ground. The first homesteads in Muurame emerged only in the 15th century. In the 16th century, settlers migrated from the Savo region. The village Muurame belonged at that time to the parish Jämsä.

When in 1865 the management of political communities became separated from the church administration, was Muurame part of the community Korpilahti. From this they split in 1921 from a separate municipality. In 1924 split of the Muurame located on an island in Lake Päijänne community Säynätsalo from. Policy

Economy

Muurame is in the economic catchment area of ​​Jyväskylä, and therefore has an urban industrial structure. Of architectural interest is the 1929, designed by Alvar Aalto completed parish church of Muurame. It is Aalto's first church building and combines neoclassical and functionalist style features.
