Muzzle (device)

A muzzle (also muzzle ) is an object which limits the use of the mouth in dogs, thus in particular to prevent the biting.

There are belt - loop or muzzles, wire grid construction, and leather muzzles. This is to prevent the dog bites humans or animals. The muzzle is the dog for example applied in the practice or at the vet. For service dogs a reinforced muzzle is used, overwhelm with the trained dogs the perpetrators or suspects by attacks on the chest or back area.

In many federal states of Germany ( list of dogs ) is generally (or sometimes Halti ) imposed wearing a muzzle in relevant regulations specific breeds. From the muzzling the dogs may be exempted under certain circumstances after an examination.

In dog sports in greyhound racing a generous muzzle is mandatory.

A muzzle should not impede unduly the dog: he needs to be so large that the dog can pant and drink, but not so large that the dog can bite anyway. Too narrow muzzle is - especially if the dog is subjected to stresses - dangerous because dogs need panting to regulate body temperature.
