The Baltic Ace was a traveling under the flag of the Bahamas Car Transporter ( PCTC: Pure Car / Truck Carrier ). Established in 2007, entered service in ship sank on December 5, 2012 after a collision in the North Sea.

History

The ordered end of 2005, ship was built in 2007 under the hull number 8245/5 at the shipyard Shipyard Gdynia in Gdynia, Poland. The keel-laying ceremony took place on June 3, 2007 on February 26, the launching. The completion of the ship took place on 11 July 2007, the ship was the fifth in a series consisting of six units. Elbe Highway, Thames Highway, Highway Danube, Seine Highway and Nordic Ace, which was built between 2005 and 2007 on the Polish shipyard.

The shipowner was Baltic Highway Limited, bereedert it was Stamco of Ship Management Company in Piraeus. Companies was the ship of EUR Marine Logistics ( EML ), a joint venture between the Japanese Mitsui OSK Lines and Norwegian Höegh Auto Liners. Euro Marine Logistics began the ship for the transportation of vehicles and other Ro / Ro cargoes in Europe. At the time of the collision drove the ship charter of the Norwegian company United European Car Carriers ( UECC ).

Sinking after collision

On December 5, 2012, the Baltic Ace collided against 19:15 clock with the Cyprus-registered feeder vessel Corvus J about 65 nautical miles off the Dutch province of Zeeland. The ship was in 1417 with brand new cars and the Mitsubishi brand on the way from Zeebrugge in Belgium to Kotka in Finland. After the collision, the Baltic Ace flooding reported and sank within a short time. The container ship had been damaged, but not in danger of disappearing, and even helped with the rescue operation.

Salvage operation

From the 24-member crew were eleven abgeborgen with helicopters from life rafts that were found only about 22 clock. Two people were taken by ships. Eleven members of the crew of the ship were killed in the accident.

The rescue forces used infrared cameras to find survivors. The Dutch defense minister declared that two ships of the Dutch navy would continue the search at first, while the helicopter would have difficulty with the strong wind prevailing at the accident. End of the week the search was set for survivors.

Technical data and equipment

The ship was powered by a slow-moving seven-cylinder two-stroke crosshead diesel engine of the type MAN B & W 46MC -C with an output of 9170 kW. It sported a cross beam control system in the bow and stern.

To power the three generators of the manufacturer Daihatsu Diesel and an emergency generator were available.

For cargo handling two stern ramps were available. One of the ramps could be opened directly aft. She was 19 meters long and 6 meters wide. The other ramp could be opened laterally toward the starboard side. She was 27.5 meters long and 6 meters wide. The ramps have a maximum load of 70 tonnes.

The maximum height of the loading deck was 4.8 meters.
