The Frithjof is a former German fisheries protection vessel. Owners and operators was the Federal Office for Food and Forestry, today's Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food.

Construction and technical data

The ship was built in 1968 on the Schlichting -Werft in Travemünde, also on the 1973 fisheries research vessel Walther Herwig was built. The ship is 76.76 meters long and 11.79 meters wide. It had as fisheries research vessel 5.14 m Draft was measured with 1716 BRT and displaced 2310 tons. The diesel-electric drive with 2800 hp allowed a top speed of 15 knots. With its fuel supply of 550 tons, the ship could travel 13,000 nautical miles. The crew consisted of 35 men.

Fisheries Protection Service

The ship was delivered on 6 September 1968, put into service with the home port of Cuxhaven. Until 1997 it was used for monitoring and control of fishing. It was not only in the exclusive economic zone in the North Sea, as well as eingesatzt under international agreements outside the German marine waters of the North Sea and the North Atlantic. Main purpose was to monitor the compliance of fishing bans and control of minimum mesh size of nets, network accessories and the minimum sizes of fish caught.

Training ship Emsstrom

The Frithjof was put out of service in 1997 and soon sold out. New owner was founded by a group of German shipping companies in early 1998 Charitable Society Training Center MS Emsstrom mbH, which renamed the ship in Emsstrom and operational as a training ship in Leer. The focus was on the systematic training of Filipino seafarers for careers as nautical and technical ship officers (three years), training for ship's cook (three months) and safety training according to STCW 95 Training provision of gGmbH on the ship was temporarily up to ninety lines used in the home and abroad.

Due to the shipping crisis, many customers were forced to shorten the training and education or entirely cease, which in turn led to difficulties faced by society. This therefore decided to discontinue the operation of the end of 2012 and to dissolve.

The unfit efficient Emsstrom was sold in the Netherlands and initially towed to Emden on January 9, 2013. There she was taken from the Christos XXII tug on the hook on January 10. On 14 January, the Emsstrom that should be towed to Turkey fell, after collision with the Christos XXII in Lyme Bay off Hope 's Nose, Torbay. The tug had wanted to anchor here to check the towing connection.
