My Companions in the Bleak House

Girlfriends out of the house of sadness (Czech: Přítelkyně z domu SMUTKU ) is a documentary novel of the Czech writer and former dissident Eva Kantůrková.

In the book it 's about her stay in prison than remand prisoner in Prague- Ruzyne in 1981-1982. She describes the miserable sanitary conditions in prison, the daily humiliations by the prison staff, the tenacious efforts of inmates to defend his own human dignity as much as possible. These women from the margins of society are no dissidents, there are small criminals or people who are not fit for different reasons in the ideal of a socialist society and contrary by its mere existence, however: Roma women, lesbians, stray inside. The author traces 10 sensitive portraits of these women, without, as she says, to excuse their failures or to show solidarity with them.

Publication history

In 1984 the font in exile publishing house in Cologne. After the Velvet Revolution, Kantůrková involved in the Citizens' Forum and obtained a seat in the National Council, IHrr book could now appear in 1990 in Prague.

According to the book of the same four-part series of the Czechoslovak Television was filmed in 1992, in which the main role was played by Ivana Chýlková. The series was filmed in a Prague prison.
