Myasishchev M-18

In 1967, the Soviet Ministry of Defense began a heavy strategic bomber thinking. The occasion was the U.S. decision on the development and construction of the project AMSA (Advanced Manned Strategic Aircraft), the future Rockwell B-1B. In 1969 the contract for the development and construction of a major strategic pivot wing reconnaissance and bomber was granted. Three design offices participated in this invitation to tender; A.N.
