Mycelium

The mycelium, mycelium also, plural mycelia or mycelia, is all the hyphae of the filamentous cell of a fungus or bacterium.

In common parlance, are called fungi only the visible fruiting bodies. However, the actual fungus is fine, mostly invisible network of hyphae in soil or - in tree fungi - in the wood. Pilzmyzele can reach a size of about one square kilometer and an old age, such as the honey net.

Under dikaryotem mycelium ( Paarkernmyzel ) means a mycelium, which contains, in each cell, two cores having different genome, a positive core and negative core. It is formed by the fusion of two monokaryoter mycelia, a plus mycelium from the plus mating type and a minus mycelium from the minus mating type, which in turn germinate from spores monokaryoten. In stand fungi, the cell division of dikaryoten cells in the mycelia is often associated with the formation of buckles.

Apart from fungi, there are also bacteria that form mycelia, such as streptomycetes.
