Mylau

Geography

Geographical Location

Mylau spans altitudes 290-370 m above sea level. NN. in the valleys of Göltzsch and coming from the direction of space Reichenbach creek. The latter is known to exist in the population, particularly under the name Seifenbach because at the creek in Heinsdorfergrund and Reichenbach were dye works in the 19th century.

Adjacent communities in the Vogtland are Limbach and the cities Netzschkau and Reichenbach im Vogtland. In the north of the Thuringian district Greiz borders.

History

At the foot of a castle built in 1180, the present castle Mylau, built in the 14th century a settlement that was awarded in 1367 by Charles IV, the city law. The town remained until the end of the 17th century insignificant - in 1650 there were only 24 townhouses - after that it grew through the resettlement of handloom rapidly. The latter were a prerequisite for the considerable development of the textile industry in the 19th century. Development of the population ( as of 1960 December 31):

Culture and sights

The Mylau Castle was never destroyed and is located at the mouth of the creek in the room Göltzsch. In the north- west of the city, the Göltzsch is spanned by the world famous Göltzschtalbrücke. Interesting is also the St. Wenzel's Church built in 1890 that has an organ by Gottfried Silbermann (1730 /31).

Sports

On the outskirts of Mylau is the turning point of taking place each October Göltzschtal Marathon. This is Germany's second oldest of all since its inception yet discharged marathons and the oldest in the former GDR.

Memorials

  • Burial and memorial plaque at the cemetery for four unknown concentration camp prisoners who were thrown dead from a transport train in the evacuation of a concentration camp in January 1945

Economy and infrastructure

By Mylau leads the Federal Highway 173. 1895 the town was granted its own rail connection to Reichenbach on the railway line Reichenbach- Göltzschtalbrücke. From 1905 there was a further distance to Lengenfeld. After setting the tourist traffic in 1957, the route was finally abandoned in 1970 and dismantled soon after. The nearest railway stations are now in Reichenbach in Vogtland and Netzschkau.
