Mylomys

The African furrows tooth rats ( Mylomys ) are a rodent species from the group of Altweltmäuse ( Murinae ). The genus includes two species.

These rodents have a relatively long fur which is colored whitish- beige yellowish- gray at the top and at the bottom. Your body is stocky, hands and feet have only three functional toes. Named giving feature is the marked with furrows upper incisors, the lower teeth gnawing lack this groove. African furrows tooth rats reach a body length 12-19 centimeters, the tail measures 10 to 18 inches and the weight is 50 to 190 grams.

The animals are in the central Africa - to Uganda and Ethiopia, Guinea - spread. They inhabit moist, lined with grass areas and occur in up to 2,400 meters above sea level. They are predominantly diurnal and feed on grasses and stems.

There are two types:

  • Mylomys dybowskii is the more common type, it comes from Guinea to Uganda. According to IUCN, it is not at risk.
  • Mylomys rex is only known from south-western Ethiopia. It is unclear whether this is actually a separate species.

Systematically, they are classified within the Altweltmäuse in the Arvicanthis group.
