Mymensingh

Division

Mymensingh ( Bengali: ময়মনসিংহ, Maẏamanasiṃh, English: Mymensingh ) is a city in Bangladesh, 115 km north of the capital Dhaka. It is the administrative seat of the district of Mymensingh and lies on the banks of the former main stream of the Brahmaputra, the main course is 40 kilometers to the west since the sudden change in the 1780s. In the city formerly known as Nasirabad live at least 300,000 inhabitants. The city covers an area of ​​21.73 km ² and is available in 21 Districts ( Wards ) divided.

History

Nasirabad was from the 16th to 18th centuries an important trading center of the Mughal Empire. In addition to the many different buildings from the Mughal period, nestled at the Brahmaputra was built in 1905-1911 Palace of Mymensingh ( Mymensingh Rajbari ) is an architectural highlight. In the palace, is now a training academy for teachers. Since 1869, the city has a separate municipal government ( municipality ).

Business and education

Mymensingh serves as an important trade center for rice, jute, sugarcane, tobacco, mustard seeds and lentils. It is also an important location for jute and electrical supply industries. In Mymensingh there is an agricultural university and several cooperating with the University of Dhaka colleges.

Religion

Mymensingh is the seat of the Diocese of Mymensingh.
