Myobatrachidae

Crinia signifera

Australian Südfrösche ( Myobatrachidae ) are a native to Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea family of anurans ( Anura ). The species is very small to medium sized frogs ( snout-vent lengths of two to eleven centimeters ) which are ground -dwelling. They belong to the fauna of Australia and get there after the usual here systematics of amphibians found in 21 genera and 128 species. It both ways with aquatilem tadpole stage and those are represented with direct terrestrial development within the eggs.

Some species lay their eggs in masses of foam, which they themselves have fabricated and floating on the water. A bizarre form of parental care exhibited the now probably extinct gastric-brooding frogs ( Rheobatrachus ). The Banjo Frogs Limnodynastes dumerilii and Limnodynastes dorsalis bear their name, therefore, because listening to the mating calls of the males so much like the string sounds of a banjo.

As can be observed in almost all anurans worldwide, go also the populations of the Australian Südfrösche back. The reasons for this are still unclear. Explain, among other things, the increased UV radiation, a fungal disease or pesticidal use are assumed.

Taxonomy

The systematic definition of Myobatrachidae is uneven. Unlike what is shown here, the subfamily Limnodynastinae is regarded as a separate family Limnodynastidae by some authors. Same time, the genera Mixophyes and Rheobatrachus be made notwithstanding the Myobatrachinae. The gastric-brooding frogs were originally classified once in a separate taxon Rheobatrachidae.
