Myokymia

The myokymia ( gr μύς " muscle ", κύμα "wave" ) is an involuntary muscle activity in the form of short tetanic contractions in muscle fibers of skeletal muscle. Here, a wave- like aspect of the muscle movement is visible, without there being an actual movement excursion. Myokymien may persist during sleep and are not painful. They are thus of fasciculations ( circumscribed ), spasms ( painful) and myoclonus ( apparent motion effect ) to distinguish. Myokymien are often harmless and come in healthy before, for example by strong muscular fatigue, but they can also be signs of illness, for example, of motor neurone disease. The clinical picture of the superior oblique myokymia really does not describe myokymia, but a tremor.
