Mys Shmidta

Mys SmithA (Russian Мыс Шмидта ) is an urban-type settlement with 492 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the north of the Chukchi Autonomous Okrug in the far east of Russia.

Geography

The settlement is situated on the coast of the Chukchi Sea, about 650 kilometers north of the county government center Anadyr on a Spit, which (also Kelmantagen ) that separates the lagoon from the open sea Akatan. A little north is the same chap ( Mys SmithA is in Russian for Cape Schmidt).

Mys SmithA heard with administrative center in Egwekinot since June 2008 Rajon Iultinski. Previously, Mys SmithA center of Rajons Schmidtowski, which was merged in 2008 with the Iultinski rayon and rayon briefly Vostochny ( " Ostrajon " ) was called.

History

The town was founded in 1931 as a base for the development of the extreme north- east of the Soviet Union, and identified as the Cape after the Arctic explorer, academician and politician Otto Schmidt.

Economy and infrastructure

The only industry of the surrounding area are today operated by members of the indigenous peoples of reindeer herding and gold panning (2005 1625 kilograms of gold were promoted ).

In the settlement there is a weather station.
