Mystic River (novel)

Track of the Wolf (AKA Mystic River) is a novel by the American Dennis Lehane from the year 2001. It is about three childhood friends whose lives are overshadowed by a crime and is done as adults, as another act of violence, again with this confronted past. Namesake of the novel is the Mystic River in Massachusetts, USA. Clint Eastwood's film version of the novel in 2004, won two Oscars. In parallel with the release of the film, the work was published in the German-speaking area in several editions under the title Mystic River.

Action

The venue is East Buckingham, a fictional, rough working-class neighborhood in Boston. The history covers the childhood of Jimmy Markum, Dave Boyle and Sean Devine. While the boys play tug two men posing as police officers, Dave in a car. For days he is abused, then he can escape. After that nothing is as before: Dave is shielded by his mother and the bad conscience keeps his friends away.

25 years later all three families have formed and still live in the same area, but their paths cross only rarely. Jimmy, the former underworld boss, leads a store and watching over the private life of his oldest daughter, Katie. Sean has become a police officer, his wife has blown him pregnant and calls him constantly without login. Dave, Drawn since the crime, playing with his son hockey and married Jimmy's cousin.

One night Dave comes home covered in blood and told his wife to have slain a robber. The next day, Katie's body is found. Sean takes on the case, and all indications point to Dave as perpetrators. As also Dave's wife thinks he is Katie's murderer, the course of events can no longer be stopped.
