Mzimba

Mzimba is a 1,400 mile-high city with 20,000 inhabitants ( 2006 estimate ) in the Northern Region of Malawi. It lies on the road Lilongwe- Mzuzu and is capital of the district, which has an area of 10,430 km ² and 610 944 inhabitants.

Mzimba was once a center of the Ngoni, but lost since 1940 have steadily gained importance. Part of the Ngoni had fled to here from the brutal wars of the Zuluhäuptlings Shaka ( 1787-1828 ). Mzimba was before the end of mine migration in the Republic of South Africa in the 1980s, a recruitment focus for guest workers there. These contacts hold up today and are reflected mainly in the range of goods.

Especially in the west of Mzimba district - education level of the people is higher than in the rest of Malawi. The district recorded continuously high economic growth rates. Mzimba is the center of the informal economy of Malawi.

The district is the largest in Malawi and is essentially a plateau at about 1200 meters above sea level, from which runs from south to north chain of Viphya Mountains extends to those to the north of the Champhila with 1820 meters, the Kamwe with South 1809 meters, with 1906 meters of Chikangawa and Mphamphala with 1954 meters the highest tower. The Viphya forest is considered the largest man ever planted. Therefore, the timber industry occupies a central position in this district. In the north of the district Wildlife Refuge is located Vwaza Marsh Game Reserve, which is shared with the neighboring district Rumphi. An important town in the district next to Mzimba is Ekwendeni. The district itself is essentially agricultural and lives on the cultivation of maize, tobacco and cotton.

Mzimba has an airfield, good primary and secondary schools, a hospital and is connected to the national grid.
