Mzuzu

Region

Mzuzu is the capital of the Northern Region of Malawi and with 128 432 inhabitants at the same time the third largest city in the country.

Geography

Mzuzu is located 279 km north of the capital Lilongwe at an altitude of 1,254 m in a mountain saddle of Viphya Mountains, at the northern end of the Viphya plateau. The city has an area of 48 km ².

Population

While the population of the Northern region of 1989-2008 grew by 3.3 % annually, Mzuzu recorded as the economic center of the northern region rose by an average of 4 % per year, with the proportion of the female population at 4.3%, much higher growth rate than the male. The national average was 2.8% by 2008. The counted in the survey in 2008 26.858 households had an average household size of 4.8 persons, which is quite equal to the national average.

Infrastructure

Traffic Technically Mzuzu is connected through the country roads M1 and M5, about Mzimba and Nkhata Bay on the southern part of the country and connected to the North following the M1 with Karonga and Chitipa with the neighboring country of Zambia. Mzuzu has a small airport ( IATA code: ZZU ) with a 1,400 -meter paved airstrip, about the national air traffic to Lilongwe and Blantyre is settled. The drinking water supply for the city is secured via a reservoir which is located east of the city.

Economy

The city of Mzuzu is the economic and administrative center of the North represents the agriculture with coffee, tea, macadamia, tobacco and cotton cultivation in the region also determines essentially the income of the residents of the city.
