Mzwakhe Mbuli

Mzwakhe Mbuli (* 1958 in Sophiatown, Johannesburg ) is a folk poet and singer from South Africa.

Life

Mbuli was born in the Johannesburg district of Sophiatown, which was evicted until 1959. Mbuli was forced to move with his parents to Soweto. At the funeral of an anti -apartheid activists in Soweto he recited poems for the first time and was so popular. To this end, he also helped his height of approximately 2,10 meters. In the 1980s, he was arrested several times by the South African authorities. He received a passport so that he could take any trips abroad for the United Democratic Front, where he worked as a cultural ambassador.

He published a collection of poems Before Dawn (1989 ) and the music albums Change Is Pain ( 1987), Unbroken Spirit (1989) Resistance and Defence ( 1992) and Africa ( 1993), in which he popular in South Africa music styles such as Mbaqanga, Kwela, Marabi and gospel mixed. For Unbroken Spirit, which contains numerous written texts in solitary confinement, Mbuli was awarded a gold disc. His texts he wrote in English and Zulu.

Mbulis international career began in 1990 in Germany, as he stood together with African musicians Youssou N'Dour, Miriam Makeba and Thomas Mapfumo on stage. He performed at the funeral of Chris Hani and at the inauguration of President Nelson Mandela.

1999 Mbuli was convicted of armed bank robbery and possession of a hand grenade. He always denied the allegations. 2002 Nelson Mandela went to visit him in prison. The following year, Mbuli was released. In 2004 he released his album Mbulism.
