Dimethylnitrosamine is a chemical compound from the group of nitrosamines.

Occurrence

Dimethylnitrosamine is found in food such as cured meats and alcoholic beverages. It is also produced in animals when feeding diets containing nitrite additives. It also occurs as a degradation product of aminophenazone. In humans, one finds the connection in some diseases such as schistosomiasis.

Production and representation

Dimethylnitrosamine can be obtained by reaction of secondary amines with sodium nitrite in the presence of hydrochloric acid.

Properties

Dimethylnitrosamine is a yellow liquid with a faint odor, which is readily soluble in water. It decomposes gradually when storing (especially when exposed to light ), and when heated, with nitrogen, hydrogen, ethylene, methane, nitrogen oxides are formed and dimethylamine.

Use

Dimethylnitrosamine can be used for the preparation of other chemical compounds (eg, daminozide ).

Safety

The vapors of dimethylnitrosamine can combine with air to form an explosive mixture (flash point 61 ° C). It is classified as a carcinogen.
