N. Viswanathan

N. Viswanathan ( born 1928 or 1929 in Vellore, Madras, † November 17, 2010 in Calcutta, West Bengal ) was an Indian university teacher and actor.

Life

N. Viswanathan came from the Tamil Vellore. He studied English and Political Science at St. Xavier's College, University of Calcutta, and briefly at the University of Oxford. For 40 years he worked himself as a professor of English at St. Xavier 's College.

He was an amateur actor and member of Utpal Dutt's theater group People's Little Theatre as well as his own group Calcutta player with whom he performed pieces in English, Bengali and Tamil. Since the 1960s, N. Viswanathan played in movies, so in Mrinal Sen Punashcha (1961) and Satyajit Ray's Kanchenjungha (1962). In addition to his work in the Bengali film, he was also active in the Tamil film, as in the Rajinikanth film Moondru Mudichu (1976).

His son, Ashoke Viswanathan is a film director; N. Viswanathan often played with in his films. Most recently, he starred in the movie Gumshuda his son, for which he also wrote the screenplay.

N. Viswanathan died at the age of 81 years.
