Naberezhnye Chelny

Naberezhnye Chelny (Russian Набережные Челны pronunciation / i;? Tatar Чаллы / Çallı ) is a large city with 513 193 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Russian republic of Tatarstan. After the Republic capital Kazan is the second largest city of Tatarstan.

Geographical Location

Naberezhnye Chelny is located in the east of Tatarstan on the Kama, which feeds the Nischnekamsker dam above the town, the largest of the river. The distance to Kazan is 225 km, the nearest town is Jelabuga, located 20 km away from Naberezhnye Chelny away.

History

First mention of the town is found in a Tatar document from the year 1680, in which was founded by a 1172 Volga Bulgarians City Yar Çallı is mentioned. Subsequent archeology showed that at the site of the present town until the 14th century, so at times the Volga Bulgars state, actually a village must have existed.

In Russian documents, the village was first mentioned in 1626, under its present name, which is a Russian form of the name Yar Çallı ( the additional Nabereschnyje was probably derived from Bereschnyje, ie literally "at the ( Kama ) banks located "). Until the 19th century, Naberezhnye Chelny was a village in the predominantly fishing and trade was operated. In 1847 it counted 1726 inhabitants.

Beginning of the 20th century brought the first place industries. In 1930 Naberezhnye Chelny, now counting 9300 inhabitants, a city. Still, she was up in the 1970s, a rather insignificant small town. However, after 1976 in the industrial combine KAMAZ started the production of trucks, diesel engines and tanks, the city population rose sharply, peaking in 1989, the figure of 500,000.

1982 Naberezhnye Chelny was prepared by the Secretary General of the Central Committee of the CPSU, Leonid Brezhnev, renamed Brezhnev ( Брежнев ), but received 1988 back to its original name.

Economy

The most important industry in Naberezhnye Chelny applies mechanical engineering, is represented next to the KAMAZ plant, the main employer in the town with several other factories. Some halls of Kamaz were used to build the industrial park " Kamaz Master " in which medium-sized enterprises and suppliers were settled for Kamaz.

The hydroelectric power plant of Nischnekamsker dam is located in Naberezhnye Chelny and supplies the city with energy. There are also two cogeneration plants and enterprises of metallurgy, construction and food industries.

Naberezhnye Chelny is close to the highway M7, which leads past the neighboring Jelabuga. Furthermore, there is an inland port, an international airport, a train station and in the urban public transport, a tram network.
