Naftali Zvi of Ropshitz

Naftali of Ropschütz, Rabbi Naphtali Zevi Hurwitz of Ropszice (* May 22, 1760, † 1827), was a Hasidic rabbi from Galicia.

He was born on the day that died from the Rabbi Baal Shem Tov. He was a student of Yaakov Yitzchak Horowitz, the Seer of Lublin, and of Rabbi Mendel of Rymanov and is considered one of the most eminent disciples of Rabbi Mendel. According to one version, it came between Naftali of Ropschütz and R. Mendel to the dispute over the impact of the Russian campaign of Napoleon. While R. Mendel was hoping for the victory of Napoleon and those regarded as beneficial for the Jews, Naftali afraid of Ropschütz a suppression of the Jews to victory for Napoleon. According to another version R. Mendel saw this war as a precondition for the coming of the Messiah while Naftali of Ropschütz rejected this view. This disagreement both took an opportunity to go to Rabbi Israel of Koschnitz.

About his life little is known. Martin Buber says about him that he was laid up in his youth also quite bitter strike, but was later appreciated by his contemporaries as a man of extraordinary wisdom. He was married twice and had to divorce his first wife, who is characterized as a quarrelsome and vain. Unlike other Hasidic rabbis him were the so-called " ransom " alien. Naftali of Ropschütz was a teacher of Chaim of Zan.
