Nagaoka, Niigata

Nagaoka (Japanese长 冈 市, - shi) is a city in the interior of the Niigata prefecture on Honshu, the main island of Japan.

It lies on the banks of the River Shinano, about 250 km from Tokyo.

History

The city was founded on April 1, 1906.

Shortly before the end of World War II, large parts of the city were destroyed in an air raid. Multiple, the city was ravaged by earthquakes, most recently in 2004. Nagaoka has been chosen as the symbol of the town a phoenix that is supposed to represent the will of the resurrection from the rubble. This is also the biggest fireworks of Japan, which takes place every year from second to fourth on August Shinano River and its completion is called Phoenix.

Economy

Nagaoka is located in the center of an oil and gas area and is therefore an industrial site with mainly chemical industry, in addition to engineering and tooling.

Twinning

  • United States Fort Worth (Texas, United States), since November 9, 1987
  • Germany Trier ( Germany ), since June 2, 2006 Nagaoka since 2006 has been twinned with the German city of Trier. The partnership agreement was signed in Trier by Mayor Tamio Mori and Mayor Helmut Schroer on 1 April 2006 in Nagaoka and on 2 June 2006.
