Nagiso (Nagano)

Nagiso ( Japanese:南 木 曽 町, machi ) is a town in Kiso -gun in Nagano Prefecture on the main Japanese island of Honshu. Of all the county's towns in Nagano Prefecture she is the one with the least population. Nagiso is a member of the "Association of the most beautiful villages in Japan" (Nihon de Mottomo utsukushii mura rengō ).

Geography

Nagiso lies at the southern end of the Kisotals at Kiso. Covering an area of ​​215.96 km ² 4,906 people ( as of March 1, 2010). Approximately 94 % of the administrative city area consists of forested mountains. This urban area has a north- south extent of 15 km and a west-east extension of 20 km. Adjacent municipalities are the county-level city ( shi) Iida and the villages ( mura ) Achi and Okuwa and the district-free city Nakatsugawa in Gifu Prefecture in Nagano Prefecture.

History

Due to its location on Nakasendō postal stations originated in the Edo period in what is now Nagiso with accommodation options for travelers. Since the Meiji period, there were initially a number of independent small communities in the area. The city Nagiso was finally established on January 1, 1961 by merging the villages Azuma and Tadachi.

Traffic

By Nagiso leads the Chūō Main Line, the West route will be operated by JR Central. The stations Jūnikane, Nagiso and Tadachi are in Nagiso. Furthermore, lead the national highways 19 and 256 through the city.

In Nagiso there are several campsites and thermal baths ( onsen ). Also located with Tsumago one of the few remaining post offices from the Edo period in Nagiso.
