Region:

Yukon, Northwest Territories

The Nahanni Range Road was completed in the early 1960s. It runs from Watson Lake along with the Robert Campbell Highway until after Cantung Junction. There, the road turns east off the highway direction, via the border with the Northwest Territories to a mine that is known either Cantung (Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation ) or under the name of the degraded element Tungsten (English for tungsten). The section between Watson Lake and Cantung Junction is however officially only part of the Robert Campbell Highway.

The Nahanni Range Road is continuous unpaved, and is not recommended for general private transport. Originally two-thirds of the road were in possession of the territory, which is why it also gave campsites along the road. The rest of the road was in possession of the mine; this section also was public, but there was no infrastructure along the road. When the mine was closed in 1986, you needed the road less and less, and the maintenance has become increasingly difficult. Since the mine was put back into operation in 2003, restored to the road, but for private transport is not recommended.
