Geography
Geographical Location
The municipality is located in the Nahe -Waldau Thuringian Forest Nature Park. The districts Waldau and Oberrod lie in the valley of the lock and the districts Schleusingerneundorf and Hinternah lie in the valley of the Nahe.
The district is situated on the Oberrod fed by the dam sluice Ratscher.

History
The unit community was formed on 1 August 1996 as part of the municipal reform.
Industrial history
From 1925 to 1992 there was a glassworks in Waldau. The later VEB glass factory Waldau (1989: 500 employees) put forth until 1990, including a large part of the packaging jars for baby food industry in the GDR. Due to the low productivity and the decline of the sales cooperation with East German customers the glass factory was shut down in March 1992. Mid-nineties, the large core area of the glass factory was demolished. The environment-related substances that were utilized in the manufacture of glass had, through a comprehensive rehabilitation program of the loaded material ( 12,000 tonnes) are removed. Some buildings and warehouses were later fed to a subsequent use by professionals.

Culture and sights
Structures
- Late Gothic Protestant church with a crucifix from the Franconian carving the Riemenschneider period of 1614.
- Charcoal burning in the district Schleusingerneundorf, an existing operation in charcoal, which can be visited.
- St. Wolfgang Chapel in the district Oberrod, restored tower a 1491 first mentioned and probably destroyed in the Thirty Years' War Church.
