Nail matrix

The nail matrix, also known as nail root forms the cells from which the finger or toenail is. It is located above the nail moon and is protected by the overlying cuticle.

The nail matrix is the real growth area. The nail matrix is formed by an invagination of the epidermis. The dead skin cells are sloughed off not in the nail matrix.
