Najem Wali

Najem Wali ( born October 20, 1956 in Basra ) is an Iraqi writer living in Germany.

Life

Initially studied Wali German literature at the University of Baghdad. After completing his studies in 1978 Najem Wali was called up for military service. On 22 September 1980 the outbreak of the Iraq - Iran war, Walis vintage was convened again for military service, after which he falsified his military specifications and fled to West Germany. Here he studied German at the University of Hamburg. After successfully completing his studies Najem Wali moved in 1987 to Madrid to study Spanish literature there. In 1990 he returned to Hamburg.

His novel " A place called Kumait - the story of a circumcision " Najem Wali wrote already in 1989 until 1997, he appeared in Cairo in Arabic, a year later, in French and in 2002 in Swedish. . The book takes a taboo by stating circumcision torture. Therefore, it took eight years before an Arab publisher took to print the novel.

Today Najem Wali lives in Berlin and works as a journalist and correspondent for the most significant Arabic daily Al Hayat addition to his work as an author. He also writes for various German newspapers such as The Süddeutsche Zeitung or the time. He is a member of the PEN center of Germany.
