Najma Heptulla

Najma Heptulla ( born April 13, 1940) is an Indian politician.

Life

Heptulla holds a Master of Science degree in zoology and a doctorate in heart anatomy at the University of Colorado at Denver. She was a member of the Congress party and was responsible for its general secretary in 1986 and with the youth activities of the All India Congress Committee and the NSUI. Since 1980 Heptulla was a member of the Upper House of Maharashtra and was a candidate in 1980, 1986, 1992, 1998 as a Congress candidate. She was repeatedly deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

From 1999 to 2002 she was chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. She spoke on 7 September 1999 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the first meeting of the German Bundestag as the first female guest speaker before the German Bundestag. In 2004, she stepped over to the Bharatiya Janata Party. She is married and has three daughters.
