Nakhon Phanom

Province

Nakhon Phanom ( Thai: นครพนม ) is a city ( Mueang thesaban ) on the west bank of the Mekong River, opposite the Laotian town of Thakhek, and also the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Nakhon Phanom Nakhon Phanom Province and the. The Nakhon Phanom Province is located in the northeast region of Thailand, Isan.

Etymology

The name Nakhon Phanom is derived from the Sanskrit word Nakhon (city ) and the Khmer Phnom ( hill ) composed, or " City of Hills ". In this case, however, the hills in neighboring Laos are meant rising on the eastern horizon.

Geography

Nakhon Phanom is located at the extreme north-eastern border of Thailand on the border with Laos on the banks of the Mekong.
