Nama (island)

Nama is a small coral island in the archipelago of the Caroline Islands in the central Pacific Ocean. Politically, it is part of the State of Chuuk of the Federated States of Micronesia.

Geography

Nama is located approximately 65 kilometers southeast of Chuuk Atoll in the center and 125 km northwest of the Mortlock Islands (formerly prefectures Islands) in the southeast of the state. The nearest landmass is the Losap Atoll, 13 km south-east of Nama located. The fringed by a coral reef island is 1.4 km long, up to 0.6 km wide and has an area of ​​0.748 km ² ( 74.8 ha) on.

Nama has an average height of three meters, and a maximum of six meters in the north.

Management

The densely populated island belongs to the statistical region Mortlocks island and forms a separate municipality with a population of 995 in 2000. Residents speak a dialect of Chuukesischen language, which belongs to the Micronesian languages.
