Nambaryn Enkhbayar

Nambaryn Enkhbayar [ nɑmbɑʁɨ ː n ɛŋxbɑjɑʁ ] (Mongolian Намбарын Энхбаяр; born June 1, 1958 in Ulaanbaatar ) was 2005-2009 President of Mongolia.

Life

1975 closed Enkhbayar from the middle school, after which he studied at the Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow and at times at the University of Leeds in England. After graduating in 1980 he worked as a translator for the Mongolian Writers' Union and in 1983 took over the leadership of the Department of External Relations.

Career as a politician

., 1992 Nambaryn Enkhbayar was Minister of Culture of Mongolia and remained so until 1996 From 1997 to 2005, Nambaryn Enkhbayar Chairman of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party ( MAXN / MPRP ) - the 1990 founded as a social-democratic successor party to the Communist Party - and won with it the parliamentary elections of 2000 Am. July 26, 2000, he was appointed Prime Minister and remained in this capacity until 13 August 2004. Subsequently, he was until 2005 Chairman of the Parliament.

On 22 May 2005 he was elected with 53.4 % for President of Mongolia and is the successor of Natsagiin Bagabandi. His main opponent Mendsaichaniin Enchsaichan, who was the leader of the Democrats also two years head of government, received 20 % of votes. A quarter of the votes shared by two well-known entrepreneurs. Main theme of the campaign was the market economy and the fight against corruption and unemployment.

Under the provisions of Mongolia Nambaryn Enkhbayar had to let his party membership during the rest time as president. In the 2009 presidential election Enkhbayar defeated the candidate of the opposition, Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj.

2010 changed the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party ( MPRP ) its name in Mongolian People's Party ( MVP). Enkhbayar rejected this renaming, that should signal a move away from the communist past, strictly and became chairman of a Mongolian under the old name People's Revolutionary Party ( MPRP ) newly founded party.

On April 13, 2012 Nambaryn Enkhbayar was arrested on charges of corruption and abuse of power. Enkhbayar described his arrest as politically motivated. On 2 August 2012, he was sentenced to four years in prison.
