Namibia Defence Force

The Namibian Defence Force (NDF ), the Armed Forces of the Republic of Namibia. Are not subject to the Namibian Defence.

The NDF was formed after Namibia's independence in 1990. The Constitution of Namibia (Chapter 15) shall outline the basis of the NDF as a " defender of the territory and national interests " firmly. The armed forces are thus legally be used at home and abroad.

The main task is to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial independence of Namibia through protection against foreign attackers. In addition, the NDF can be used to support civilian tasks, such as in case of natural disasters, but also for the protection of government buildings. The NDF with their regular forces is also an integral part of the Standby Force (english Standby Force ) of the Southern African Development Community.

History

The Namibian Defence Force emerged from the various military and paramilitary groupings of the 23-year liberation struggle. These included the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN; People's Liberation Army ) and South West African Territorial Force ( SWATF; South African territory forces). The British began after the independence of Namibia with the formation of the NDF together with the Kenyan UNTAG.

Since 1992, Namibia also receives aid from Germany and was admitted to the course in the equipment assistance program for foreign forces. The focus of German aid is in the range vehicles. Army

The Army ( Namibian Army) is by far the largest branches of the armed force of the NDF. It has (as of 2001) on tank T- 55 infantry fighting vehicle models BRDM -2, BTR -60, casspir, Wolf Turbo, artillery ZiS -3, G2, and BM -21 assault rifles as well as the model AK -47.

Air force

The Namibian Air Force ( Namibian Air Force) is the second largest branches of the armed force of the NDF, but overall what equipment Number and personnel concerns very small. It was formally founded on 13 March 2005.

The Air Force is stationed at its headquarters in Grootfontein and at military airfields in Keetmanshoop and Karibib. Helicopters are also at Eros airport in Windhoek.

Marine

Foreign missions

The NDF has sent troops as part of UN missions by, among others, Liberia, Ethiopia, Côte d' Ivoire, Sudan and Eritrea. In addition, Namibia had until 2001 combat troops stationed in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but deducted on international pressure.
