Namibian parliamentary election, 1989

The parliamentary elections in Namibia in 1989 were carried out between 7 and 11 November 1989. Overall, the 701 483 eligible voters were ten parties for election. A total of 71 seats went to the National Assembly of Namibia.

Prehistory

Condition for the first free elections in Namibia was an agreement between Angola, Cuba and South Africa, in which South Africa Namibia guaranteed the independence of Cuba and would remove its troops from Angola in return.

Within the framework of UN Resolution 435 of the UN Security Council in 1989, the elections were carried out before the independence of Namibia. The elected parliament also served as a Constituent Assembly.
