Namiki Gohei I.

Namiki Gohei I. (Japanese并 木 五 瓶, Namiki Gohachi ,并 木 五八; * 1747 in Osaka, † February 27, 1808 in Edo ) was a Japanese Kabuki author.

Life and work

Born Namiki Gohei as Asakusadō Gohachi (浅 草堂 五八) in Doshōmachi district in Osaka, the son of a simple employee. First experiences with the world of theater, he made second-class theaters in Osaka. Then the change took place in one of the great theater. One theory suggests that the mid- 1760s he was a member of the writing team of the Kita -Theater under the direction of Namiki Shozo I already have and learn from him the basics of writing of plays. It is also possible that he was only some years later, mediates Namiki Jusuke this. Sometime during the Tenmei era (1764-1772), he took the name Namiki Gohachi. Together with Jusuke he was in 1772 or 1773 Tatesakusha (立て 作者, lead author, playwright and director) at the Kado theater in Osaka. In 1775 he is shown as Tatesakusha of Hayakumo Theatre in Kyoto. Two years later he was back to Osaka and had taken the name Namiki Gohei. In the same year he had his first major success as an author with the piece tenmangu Natane no Goku, which was performed at the Kado theater. A year later, with known Sanmon Gozan no Kiri, as Kinmon Gozan no Kiri, the next success. Other pieces were written and in 1790 he was the leading Kabuki -author of his time. At the request of the actor Sawamura Sojuro III. he joined in 1794 as Tatesakusha at the Miyako theater in Edo. There he received a salary of 300 ryo a year, a sum that had hitherto been reserved only for the star actors. Together with the actors Kataoka Nizaemon VII and Nakamura Noshio II, which he had brought from Osaka, he succeeded in a short time to establish significant innovations in Kabuki Edo. For two years, 1798-1800, he was again active in Osaka, so I can work until his death in 1808 at the Kawarazaki Theatre in Edo.

Overall, he has authored more than 110 Kabuki pieces during his life. Among his pupils were Namiki Gohei II, Namiki Iwazō, Kosuke Namiki, Namiki Takichi, Namiki Hanzō, Namiki Fuji, Namiki Raiji, Namiki Miyosuke, Namiki Namiki Washichi and Juzo.
