Nandaysittich

The Nandaysittich ( Nandayus nenday ) is a wading bird of the subfamily Neuweltpapageien and the only member of the monotypic genus so Nandayus. The species occurs in South America.

Appearance

The Nandaysittich reaches a body length of 30 centimeters. The plumage is predominantly green. What is striking is the predominantly black Head: forehead, crown, reins, cheeks and chin are black. In contrast, the back of the head and the neck and the ear-coverts are yellow-green.

The chest is strikingly blue tinge. The lower breast and belly are yellow-green, the back and upper tail-coverts are green. The coverts are yellow-green. The tail feathers are on the bottom of a deep, dark gray, at the top they are olive green and end up in a blue top. The beak is black.

Area of ​​distribution and behavior

The Nandaysitich comes in southeastern Bolivia, in the south of Mato Grosso, Paraguay and northern Argentina. As habitat it uses mainly savannahs and palm groves. Sometimes it forms large flocks. The animals feed on seeds, fruits, nuts and berries. There are cavity nesters that occasionally also refer cavities in fence posts.

Attitude

The Nandaysittich was first imported to Europe in 1870. He still plays in the ornamental bird holding a role. For welfare at least in pairs in aviaries attitude is necessary.
